Who we are

About us

Founded by the visionary architect Mtamu Kililo, MycoTile is more than just a company; it’s a movement towards a sustainable future. With a mission to address the housing deficit using biodegradable materials, we’re changing the narrative of construction in Africa. Partnered with renowned institutions like KIRDI and backed by Challenge Fund for Youth Employment, we’re at the forefront of eco-innovation.

Our Focus

Championing A Sustainable Construction Future

Who We Are

We are material innovators with a passion for sustainable, eco-inspired construction

MycoTile offers a high performance and cheaper alternative to traditional building materials. A carbon negative process is used to bond agricultural waste (such as maize cobs, coffee husks, coconut coir and rice husks) with mushroom mycelium to create a building material composite. The fire-retardancy is naturally enhanced by the chitin present in mycelium.  MycoTile is establishing partnerships with small scale farmers, who are compensated for providing agricultural waste, to assure security of raw material supply.

Our Commitment To Community

We are committed to Earth and her people

Imagine a tough, fire-resistant building material that could simply grow from a combination of mushrooms on agricultural waste. In Kenya, most construction materials are imported, and for this reason are relatively expensive and often simply not the best quality. The country has an annual housing demand of 250,000 units with an estimated supply of just 50,000, leaving an 80% deficit.

At the same time, there are natural resources whose potential application in construction is largely untapped. One is agricultural waste produced by small-scale farmers. Another is mycelium, a natural fungal material with industrial-level strength.

Mycotile

Our Goals

At MycoTile, we believe that building a sustainable future goes hand-in-hand with empowering the communities we serve. We are deeply committed to fostering positive social and economic impact in Kenya.

/01

Supporting Local Farmers

We actively partner with small-scale farmers, providing them with a reliable source of income by purchasing their agricultural waste. This collaborative approach not only ensures a steady supply of raw materials but also strengthens the local agricultural sector.

/02

Creating Job Opportunities

Our manufacturing processes create jobs for local communities, offering opportunities for skill development and economic growth. As we expand, we are dedicated to generating even more employment opportunities across Kenya.

/03

Addressing the Housing Deficit

We are acutely aware of the housing challenges faced by many Kenyans. By providing affordable, high-quality building materials, we aim to contribute to solutions that address the housing deficit and create safe, sustainable homes for all.

/04

Promoting Environmental Awareness

We believe in educating and engaging with communities on the importance of sustainable practices. Through workshops, partnerships, and outreach programs, we strive to raise awareness about the benefits of eco-friendly construction and inspire others to embrace a greener future.
